The Department of Physics hosts research activities in many branches of fundamental as well as applied physics. Topics that lie at the forefront of worldwide research are investigated, experimentally and theoretically. Expertises of relevance for industry and applications are present. It is impossible to convey this information in few lines, and consequently a more detailed description is spread either in the pages of the research areas (that show the tematic organisation adopted by the Ph.D. school) or in the pages of the research groups (that show in a more straighfoward way how the researchers cooperate in the research activities). In both cases the national and international collaborations are stressed. Students of the degree programmes get in touch with the research topics through advanced courses and seminars, and have many opportunities to carry on research by themselves within the Department groups mainly during the project associated with their M.Sc. thesis.
